Whether you are new to the Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) scene or you’re already a member, Midtown is now offering the best one-hour workout in the nation. Sacramento opened their latest OTF studio in Midtown this summer, which has easy access on and off the freeway. Other locations around the Sacramento area include Roseville, Natomas, Folsom, Elk Grove and coming soon, Rocklin.

The Orangetheory craze is real. This hour-long workout will melt away the pounds while making you stronger and leaner. With a combination of cardio and strength training, Orangetheory checks off all the boxes when it comes to a full body workout. It is a heart rate based interval training class. Their workout is also designed to give you an afterburn effect. As your body recovers, it will continue to burn calories at a higher rate for up to 24 hours post workout. You will wear a heart rate monitor that allows you to follow your heart rate on a screen for the duration of the hour-long class. Your heart rate zones are specific to you, a calculation is done on the computer based on your height, weight, and age. The goal is to spend 12-15 minutes in the “orange zone,” which is when your heart is working at its fat burning peak. The computer automatically tracks how many minutes you spend in the orange zone, which reflects the number of splat points you earn during class. Your heart rate numbers and splat points will be posted on the screen after class and an email will be sent to you so that you can analyze those numbers. Seasoned Orangetheory Fitness members begin to pay less attention to their heart rate numbers, as time goes on, simply because they know they are getting a killer one-hour workout. OTF offers more than just a heart rate reader. Below is a list of the equipment they offer and a description of the OTF class formats: dumbbells ranging from 5 to 50 pounds, TRX straps, adjustable benches, Bosu balls, ab dolly’s, yoga mats, treadmills, rowing machines, spin bike, elliptical.

The format of an Orangetheory class changes daily. The workouts are labeled as Endurance, Strength, Power and ESP (ESP being a combination of all three). “Endurance” days usually entail a 50/50 class meaning half the time is spent running on the treadmill while the other half is spent on the weight floor and rowing machine. Endurance days call for longer push paces and all out sprints with jogging and walking in between. On Endurance days, the weight floor entails more reps with lighter weights. “Strength” days are all about incline on the treadmill and heavy weights with fewer repetitions on the weight floor. “Power” days have shorter blocks on the treadmill, 4-5 minutes with lots of sprints and short rest periods.On the weight floor, they pump up the power with plyometrics and even some short burst rowing blocks. Instead of spending half of class on the treadmill and the other half on the weight floor, Power days usually switch back and forth, rotating between the treadmill and the weight floor for the duration of the class. “ESP” days are a combination of all three workout types: an endurance block, a strength block, and a power block. We personally love ESP days! You get a taste of distance running, incline running, and sprints with a combination of heavy and light weights on the floor.

What makes Orangetheory appealing is the fact that their classes change daily. You will never do the same workout twice or the same type of workout two days in a row. The instructors are not only there to motivate and coach you through your workout, but they offer hands-on assistance and modifications as needed. We love that the workouts truly accommodate all fitness levels, ages, genders, shapes, and sizes. The workout is as hard as you make it. You classify yourself as a walker, jogger, or runner on the treadmill, and lift as heavy or light a weight as you want on the weight floor. There are always modifications available and alternative cardio equipment if you have an injury.
